Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment: Yoga and Qigong
A Holistic Approach to Recovery
Psychological counseling, various medications and other conventional therapy methods have been used with great success by treatment centers for decades. But these methods should be only part of an overall recovery plan that focuses on healing the body, mind and spirit.
Yoga, quigong, meditation, nutritional counseling and other holistic practices can be tremendously helpful to our clients as they move toward a sober, happy life. These practices help men adapt to the recovery process, and they also help deal with stress, negative emotions and other risk factors for substance abuse.
Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice intended to promote overall well-being. Quigong is a related practice in which participants are shown how to align their body and mind through meditation. Both have been shown to reduce stress and improve physical health and wellness.
Nutritional counseling is an often overlooked aspect of addiction treatment. Most men suffering from moderate to severe addiction display a lack of basic care for their physical condition, including how and what they eat. This contributes to a decline in overall physical – and even mental – health and wellness.
Developing healthy eating patterns is critical for men who are recovering from addiction. The body needs proper nutrition to recover from the physical ravages of addiction, and knowing how to eat well on a long-term basis is an important part of living a happy, healthy lifestyle.
